Resources development and production has formed the backbone of the Western Australian's (WA) economy for many years and is project to continue into the future. WA is the world's largest producer of alumina, seaborne traded iron ore, solar salt, tantalum, and lithium and the second largest producer of rutile and zircon and about fourth largest producer of diamonds.

WA is the location for the majority of oil and gas exploration and production in Australia. The State currently produces 8 per cent of the world's liquefied natural gas (LNG) and two thirds of Australia's oil and gas production.

WA also excels in manufacturing, fabrication, assembly, technology and repairs and maintenance servicing of its marine, oil, gas and defence sectors.

The unprecedented growth has been boosted by the development and adoption of advanced technologies. Cutting edge technology developed for locating, extracting and refining raw material has resulted in knowledge and expertise in biotechnology, information and communication technology, nanotechnology, environmental management, bioformatics and process engineering.
